CMA CGM committed to preserving biodiversity

Operating across all oceans and continents, the CMA CGM Group has long been committed to preserving biodiversity, limiting the impact of its activities, contributing to the protection of fragile ecosystems and endangered species, and actively supporting research and innovation.

Protecting endangered species

The Group is actively working to minimize the impact of its operations on cetaceans worldwide. These efforts include rerouting ships to avoid key migration and breeding areas, such as the Northern Route and the Hellenic Trench, and reducing vessel speeds in sensitive regions like the American coasts. Additionally, the Group is developing specialized equipment to lower underwater noise, preventing accidental spills of hydrocarbons and cargo, and treating ballast water with UV rays to curb the spread of invasive microorganisms.

In 2022, CMA CGM financed the installation of two passive acoustic whale monitoring buoys on the east coast of the United States, in partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, to protect one of America’s most critically endangered species during its migration.

Restoring fragile ecosystems

The Group supports 30+ projects to restore damaged ecosystems and preserve marine biodiversity across the globe, alongside international environment institutions.

CMA CGM Group contributes to the preservation of marine biodiversity by working with Ecocean to deploy Biohuts—artificial habitats that promote the reproduction of marine species—in ports such as Marseille and Khalifa Port in the UAE.

CMA CGM supports the Fondation de la Mer’s mission to replant posidonia, lung of the Mediterranean, at five sites in Italy, Turkey, Malta, Greece and France.

For years now, CMA CGM has been supporting a vast program of coral reef restoration across Americas (Costa Rica, Florida), the Indian Ocean (UAE) and Oceania - including the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system located in Australia.

To address the decline of mangrove habitats in Shenzhen, China, CMA CGM Group has teamed up with the Mangrove Wetland Conservation Foundation to restore over 18 hectares of mangrove wetlands in Shenzhen Bay over three years and raise awareness among local communities.

Supporting research and innovation

Supporting research and innovation

Although the ocean covers 70% of our planet, less than 5% has been explored to date, yet science and data collection are essential for understanding its ecosystems and preserving them—that is why the Group supports scientific missions.

Since 2022, CMA CGM has been actively supporting IFREMER's efforts to advance ocean science research and conservation initiatives. As part of this collaboration, CMA CGM has contributed to the deployment of 70 tracking tags for fish and 15 tags for sea turtles in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. Additionally, the APL Savannah is equipped with a LoRa antenna, enabling it to capture and transmit data using Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
