The French Space Agency (CNES) is the government agency responsible for shaping France’s space policy and is renowned the world over for its expertise on space issues and innovation. Like CMA CGM, CNES is guided by values of excellence, passion and the ambition to face the challenges of the future.

In June 2021, the Group signed a 5-year partnership with the CNES, covering four main areas: smart ship routing and port management, hydrogen and new energies, the possibilities of space for the benefit of logistics and orbital logistics.

This unprecedented partnership builds on the Group’s innovative strategy and opens new perspectives for both CMA CGM and the CNES. On the one hand, the space industry is in need of expertise in transport and logistics, while on the other hand, the partnership also enables the Group to gain access to the groundbreaking technologies developed by the CNES, be it to optimize operations or to support energy transition.

In November 2021, CMA CGM and the industrial utility group ENGIE decided to establish a long-term strategic and industrial cooperation focused on the production of decarbonized fuels.

The cooperation intends to support the development of a synthetic methane production and distribution industry that can be used by the shipping industry. This partnership will also enable the pooling of both groups’ expertise and R&D capabilities, most notably in key technologies such as carbon capture and green hydrogen production.

An initial project to produce liquefied biomethane (BioLNG) for shipping has already been launched by both groups at the Port of Marseille, in partnership with Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence and TotalEnergies.

ENGIE Energy Observer

ENGIE Energy Observer

In February 2020 CMA CGM joined forces with Energy Observer, the first hydrogen-powered vessel to embark on a round-the-world voyage, with a shared ambition: zero emission shipping. This partnership paves the way to develop cleaner and more sustainable energies by eliminating CO2 emissions, greenhouse gases and air pollutants.

CMA CGM brings its industrial expertise to this floating lab, dedicated to testing and developing energy solutions based on hydrogen, solar, tidal and wind power. The Group also provides Energy Observer with its large-scale operational support backed by the CMA CGM Fleet Center global network. CMA CGM will also contribute to building the Energy Observer Village which will travel the globe, and is made from last-voyage containers converted and transported by CMA CGM. This Village will present the latest technological innovations to people around the world, raising awareness about ecological transition issues among all audiences.

Together, CMA CGM and Energy Observer confirm their pioneering commitment to the energy transition of the shipping industry.
