CMA CGM NOTRE DAME, the Largest European-Flagged Containership, calls at Hamburg

- The first in a series of ten 24,000 TEU LNG-powered containerships, the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME continues her maiden voyage with a call at the Port of Hamburg.
- Bunkered with bio-LNG, the vessel embodies CMA CGM's commitment to innovation and the decarbonization of maritime transport.
- Hamburg is a strategic gateway in CMA CGM's European network and a key location for the Group's long-term development in Germany.
The CMA CGM Group is pleased to announce the arrival of the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME at the EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH), located in the Port of Hamburg, one of Northern Europe's leading container ports and a strategic gateway for European and global trade.
Commissioned in May 2026, the 24,212-TEU CMA CGM NOTRE DAME is the largest containership currently sailing under a European flag. Registered under the French International Register (RIF), she reflects CMA CGM's commitment to maintaining one of the world's most modern fleets under a European flag while supporting Europe's maritime sovereignty and competitiveness. Following her naming ceremony in Le Havre and bunkering with bio-LNG in Rotterdam, Hamburg marks another important milestone in the vessel's maiden voyage between Asia and Europe.
A next-generation vessel supporting the maritime energy transition
The CMA CGM NOTRE DAME is the first in a new series of ten 24,000-TEU containerships registered under the French flag and embodies the Group's strategy to accelerate the decarbonization of shipping through technological innovation and fuel diversification.
Designed to operate on LNG, the vessel is already fully compatible with renewable bio-LNG (biomethane) and, in the future, synthetic e-methane, illustrating CMA CGM's pragmatic approach to progressively deploying low-carbon fuels as they become available.
During her previous call in Rotterdam, the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME successfully completed her first bio-LNG bunkering operation, receiving 11,125 m³ of bio-LNG. This was the largest bio-LNG bunkering ever carried out for a CMA CGM vessel and one of the largest operations of its kind worldwide. Bio-LNG, a renewable fuel produced from organic waste, can reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 67% compared with conventional marine fuels.
Today, CMA CGM operates one of the world's largest dual-fuel fleets and continues to invest in a diversified portfolio of low-carbon technologies, with the objective of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. By 2031, the Group expects to operate around 200 container ships capable of using low-carbon energies.
Hamburg: a strategic gateway for CMA CGM in Northern Europe
Germany is one of CMA CGM's most strategic European markets, and Hamburg plays a central role in the Group's maritime and logistics activities.
CMA CGM first established offices in Hamburg and Bremen in 1991. Today, Germany is a key hub within the Group's regional cluster covering Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, supported by nine offices and 23 weekly vessel calls across Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Wilhelmshaven.
The Group serves the German market through an extensive portfolio of shipping services connecting the country with Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania, supported by a strong local organization and integrated logistics and intermodal capabilities.
The vessel's call at EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg also reflects CMA CGM's growing commitment to the Port of Hamburg. Through its planned acquisition of a 20% stake in EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH), the Group is strengthening its long-term partnership with one of Europe's leading container gateways. This strategic investment will support the terminal's Western Expansion project, increasing the terminal's capacity from around 4 million TEUs today to nearly 6 million TEUs, while further improving operational efficiency and intermodal connectivity.
Together with CMA CGM's longstanding commercial presence in Germany, this planned investment reflects the Group's confidence in Hamburg's role as one of Europe's leading logistics gateways and its ambition to support the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of German supply chains.
"We are very proud to welcome the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME to Hamburg on her maiden voyage. As the largest containership sailing under a European flag, she illustrates both CMA CGM's maritime ambitions and Europe's ability to lead the transformation of global shipping. Hamburg is a strategic gateway for our customers, and our longstanding local presence demonstrates our confidence in the port's future and our determination to contribute to its continued development," said Mirja Nibbe, General Manager, CMA CGM Germany.
